A post office was established here in 1875 and the first school opened in 1876. In 1907, Levelland became an incorporated town with a population of 710 residents. The Levellands built a large cotton gin early in their history and also operated two hotels and several stores until they sold all their businesses to Texaco in 1984. The oilfield boom which began in the late 1970s led to increased development around Levelland and its adjacent townships; many new homes were built along FM 19606 (now I-635) close to major oil fields such as Parker Hill and Wellshire prospects. These developments added tens of thousands of people to Levelland's population over the next three decades, but have since declined due to various factors including changes in energy production markets and falling commodity prices.residential housing projects are still being built near some key oilfields however
