The first coffee shop in Levelland, Texas was opened in 1906. It was the first coffee shop in the area and it was called The Coffee House. The shop served coffee and pastries from a small roaster that operated out of a single-story building on the corner of First and Main Streets. In 1925, J.C. Penney opened his own store on Second Street in Levelland and started selling items related to coffee such as beans, grinds, filters, tins, cups and more. In 1937, Mr. Penney moved his store to Fourth Street in Levelland and continued to sell items related to coffee until his death in 1984. In the early 1990s, The Coffee House closed its doors for good but not before leaving an impact on the Levelland community through its contributions to local journalism, culture and commerce. In honor of its legacy, the City of Levelland designated The Coffee House as a historical landmark in 1992. Levelland is a town in Collin County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,827 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Austin–Round Rock metropolitan area. Levelland was founded in 1879 by John D. Rockefeller and his brother James Fenton as a small community on the banks of the Medina River. The name "Levelland" comes from the local variant of Texas English "Lee-vil", meaning "hill top." In 1881, Rockefeller donated land to build what would become Baylor University. In 1907, he donated $1 million to create Texas A&M University in College Station. In 1911 he donated an additional $500,000 to establish Rice University in Houston; Rice became one of America's first university campuses. Rockefeller also endowed two other universities: Southern Methodist University (SMU) in Dallas and Baylor University (BU) in Waco. Today Levelland has more than 20 colleges and universities including seven private institutions and 11 public institutions including Baylor and Texas A&M Universities. Rockefeller Center was built on land that he had donated to BU in 1965 as part of a larger campus redevelopment project called The Prairie View A&M Project which included the construction of several large buildings such as Baptist Health Grandview Hospital and George Rangel Coliseum which are still used today as anchorstones of that campus' identity
On December 10, 1859, Levelland was founded by E. H. Smith and wife Emily on a ranch near present-day Dallas. The town grew rapidly due to the influx of settlers and the discovery of oil resources in the area. In 1870, Levelland became a county seat and in 1904 it was renamedDallas after George W. Dallas, who had been its first mayor.
