The history of shooters in Levelland, Texas can be traced back to the late 1800s. The first guns were brought over from Europe and used by farmers for protection against marauders. Ammunition was expensive and hard to come by, so it was not until the early 1900s that someone started manufacturing shotgun pellets. By 1915, there were enough pellets being manufactured in Levelland to begin selling handguns. It wasn't until the 1920s that shotguns became a common tool among Texans. In 1927, an entrepreneur named Harry Hinton founded Hinton Firearms in Levelland. The company made firearms including shotguns and pistols under a variety of names including Colt and Winchester. In 1932, Harry Hinton died suddenly leaving his company to his son-in-law John Wesson who continued the family business until 1974 when it merged with Browning Manufacturing Company. Wesson Firearms is still in operation today as one of America's leading firearm manufacturers. Shooters have been coming to Levelland since at least the 1870s when settlers arrived on the land now comprising Levelland County. At first, mostshooters were subsistence hunters who relied on handguns for their trade; however, as technology improved, more people began purchasing firearms for their own Protection and Recreational purposes such as target shooting or self-defense. Shotgun ownership spread quickly through this period because ammunition was scarce and expensive; therefore, shootists could purchase any type of shotgun they wanted without worry about running out prematurely or having to wait too long for another batch to become available again (i.e., preying on Gun Show Sales). Shotgun ownership increased exponentially during World War I when production increased due to munitions shortages caused by the war effort; however gun ownership decreased after the end of WWI due largely to Prohibition which ended violence amongst Americans (O'Connell). However even though handgun ownership decreased during prohibition periodsgun Possession did not decrease completely; many Texans continued owning handguns either because they were needed for everyday tasks or because they enjoyed using them recreationally (Reynolds/Hermes). As recently as 2002 nearly half of all handgun owners in Texas were registered with some kind of license or permit (Guns & Ammo Study Group). Levelland is a small town in Ellis County, Texas, United States. The population was 710 at the 2010 census. It lies on the banks of the Trinity River and is home to many businesses and services which have helped it become an important commercial center for the area. The community was founded by James Levelland in 1881. The Levelland Manufacturing Company, which made radios and other electronics products, was one of the first businesses in town. Other early institutions include Stonewall Presbyterian Church (founded 1885), Levelland High School (established 1929), and First Baptist Church (1903). In recent years, much of what makes Levelland so unique has come from its links to technology companies such as Apple Inc., Google Inc., and Amazon.com; all three companies have their headquarters in town. Though it had only a few residents when James Levelland started farming here in 1881, within 10 years he had built a large outlying farm with 3 barns and around 100 acres of land that nowmakes up much of present-day Levelland. Over time his land became increasingly valuable as river bottoms grew rich with coal seams; over time also came newResidents including Masons, farmers & men who learned how to workrailroads

Levelland is a small town in East Texas, located on the banks of the Red River. The name Levelland comes from two French words, le vallée and allant. The original settlers were farmers who quarried river sand for building materials. In 1868, Levelland was incorporated as a village. Today, Levelland has a population of about 350 residents and is home to many local businesses and organizations. The history of Levelland dates back to 1868 when it was incorporated as a village by early settlers on the banks of the Red River.today's downtown area was first developed in the early 1920s when an agricultural company built what is now known as the White Sands Supply Store on Elm Street. Other early businesses included Blacksmith Shop, Granny Smith Creamery, Methodist Church (later called First Baptist), Bank & Trust Company (now Citizens National), Post Office (now JP Morgan Chase), Telephone Company (now AT&T), and Mr. Cavanaugh's Clothing Store which served as both a general store and clothing shop until it closed in 1966. In 1927, Mrs. J G Stephenson donated land to build her own high school which opened its doors in 1928 with grades 7-12th grade students from nearby towns such as Palestine and Springdale sharing one faculty member and three classrooms instead of separate schools each for grades 1-4th grade students like those in other villages at that time.Today’s Levelland High School offers classes from pre-Kindergarten through 12th grade along with Vocational/Technical education programs available for students who desire them including welding apprenticeship opportunities for future welders or electricians! As part of its Centennial celebration in 2007, Levelland erected several commemorative poles throughout town honoring some of its historical figures such as Mrs Stephenson’s donation of land that led to her school; James Bowie whose 1860 cattle drive resulted in over $5 million dollars being brought into town during his lifetime; W W Griffith who photographed Fort Worth during his visit in 1907; Ethel Mudd who founded Mudd Oil Field Museum; Clyde Tombaugh Jr who discovered Pluto during his 1941 space mission; Dr John Huggins who developed oil well near present day Lubbock while working for ExxonMobil.; Arthur Ashewhose won seven majors titles at Wimbledon Tennis Championships—the most ever by an American male player—during his career atleast twenty years later; plus numerous other community members featured on local memorial plaques throughout town today!
