Little Elm, Texas is a small city in the U.S. state of Texas. The population was 5,711 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Hudspeth County and part of the Austin–Round Rock metropolitan area. Little Elm is located on the South Side of Austin, about 25 miles (40 km) south-southwest of downtown Austin and about 30 miles (48 km) east-northeast of Dallas. The name "Little Elm" derived from a post office called Elmira that was established in 1868. The first settlers in what would become Little Elm were Baptist missionaries who arrived in 1875 and named their settlement after an early settler, Elijah Hicks Sr., who had been killed while trying to cross Sabine Creek with his followers near present day Elmira. In 1895, James Hogg donated land to Little Elm for a public library which became one of Austin's main attractions. The town's first school was built on this lot in 1903; it was replaced by the current building in 1955. In 1907, Little Elm received its own incorporated government when Hudspeth County was created from portions of Rice and Bexar counties. In 1920, Mayor John Denton issued a proclamation announcing that Little Elm would be host to the world's first airmail service between Dallas/Fort Worth and New York City under contract with American Air Lines Incorporated (AAL). This event is often cited as marking Little Elm's importance within TX history as well as being one of its earliest examples of international trade

He also helped promote education within the community and developed many local businesses. Other notable residents include Driscoll Fenton Sims who was a congressman from 1904-1908; Lillie Mae Fowler who served as lieutenant governor from 1945-1951; James Ahern who served two terms as mayor from 1970-1976; Donny Hathaway who served three terms as governor from 1989-1993; and Roy Barnes who was an assistant US attorney general from 1997-2001.
The first settlers in Little Elm, Texas were the Meeker family who arrived in 1827. The Meeker family was followed by the Flemings in 1848 and the Giddens in 1865. In 1901, the community of Little Elm had a population of 375 people. By 1960, Little Elm had a population of 2,844 people.
