Little Elm is a town in Hunt County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,812 at the 2010 census. Little Elm is part of the Austin-Round Rock metropolitan area. It is located on the San Antonio River just east of Interstate 35 and about 25 miles northeast of downtown Austin. The first permanent settler in what is now Little Elm was Christopher Fenton in 1836. He and his family built a cabin near present-day Lamar Boulevard and Loop 1604/US 281. Fenton named his settlement "Elm Grove". A post office called Elm Grove was established in 1837, and remained in operation until it closed in 1865. A store opened at what is now Main Street and Texas 287 in 1839 by John Tisdale. It became known as "The General Store" because it served as both a grocery store and a post office for Hunt County until 1861. The first school was built on Spring Street near present-day Bascom Avenue in 1841 by Mrs. John Hildebrandt Smith, wife of Isaac Hildebrandt Smith; it operated as an Academy until 1862 when it became an elementary school teaching students from Kindergarten to Grade 12 under the name "Hildebrandt School". In 1863, Houston lawyer George Irving bought land south of Main Street between US 281 and 290 for $1,000 which he used to build the First Baptist Church (now Good Shepherd Baptist church) on that site; construction began in 1865 and finished two years later. In 1840s there were several cotton gin operations operating along San Antonio River near present day Brackenridge Road: Jno Bailiff near Mission Drive (later US 183), Geo Wetherbee at Highland Drive (later I-35), & Will Rogers at Green Oaks Drvwy (later US 281). These operations also produced breadfruit crops which were transported downriver to Market Garden staple stores such as those run by David Potter & Co., Ebenezer Beecher & Sons, Naylor Bros., Ephraim Cutlery Company etc.; milling flour into meal for export to Europe started around this time too By 1860 there were over 100 tanneries operating throughout Texas with production ranging from leather goods to buffalo robes In March 1861 General Sam Houston surrendered command of Confederate Army stationed around Round Rock Bayou outside Austin to Union MajorGeneral Ambrose Burnside after Battle of Palo Alto Bridge; all Southern forces within Travis County except those under General Hooker surrendered unconditionally including Little Elm; incorporation date for town would be 8 October 1861 . On 7 October 1861 Andrew Johnson issued Order No 2 ordering all civilian males age 20 or older must register with local sheriff within one week or face arrest . As required by Order No 2 all men who failed to Register were subject to military service duty during hostilities against Confederate States Of America . This order led many men who had not registered with local sheriff to leave their homes en masse setting off Civil War rumors among some residents about possible treasonous behavior Many men banded together form various committees or vigilante squads dubbed “Reckless Boys” trying unsuccessfully vainly To remove unregistered citizens from towns vicinity during Early Days Of war
