Little Elm is a small town in Tarrant County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Fort Worth–Arlington metropolitan area. Little Elm is located on FM 1492 and I-610. The first settlers in what is now Little Elm were Methodist missionaries from Tennessee who arrived in 1851. They built a cabin on their farmstead which still stands today. A post office called "Emmett" was established in 1855, and by 1860 there were 5 residents living here. In 1871 Jean Baptiste Lacroix founded the Lacroix cotton gin and foundry near present day Slaughter Road and US 287 south of Little Elm. He became known for this business venture which led to his nickname "The Father of Cotton Ginning." In 1901 he donated land to build a public library, the first in Tarrant County. In 1912 Ethel (pseudonym) Ladd built her home at 810 Main Street which still stands today as one of the most beautiful examples of Prairie School architecture remaining in Tarrant County after more than 100 years! Mrs. Ladd was an accomplished artist with over 20 oil paintings and many watercolors remaining extant including several portraits of herself that are currently on display in her home museum! She also created many dolls and housewares which continue to be produced by her descendants today! In 1941 First National Bank building #1 was destroyed during World War II when it became an artillery range target; however, the bank did not suffer any damage! The building re-used as the Post Office until it burned down again in 1978; however, this time no damage resulted! It wasn't until 2007 when a $4 million dollar renovation project began that both buildings finally reopened as part of Little Elm's current cultural district! The old First National Bank Building #1 has since been restored to its former glory as one of our town's top tourist attractions! Today Little Elm contains some interesting museums such as: The Lacroix Museum (the birthplace of Jean Baptiste Lacroix), The Richardson Museum of Art (named for petroleum tycoon Willis Richardson), Old Reliable Clothing Store & Cafe (a popular local restaurant that closed its doors but left behind some very unique memorabilia!), Pecan Pie Factory & Café (home to one of my personal favorite iconic Texan desserts!), Our Lady Of Guadalupe Parish Roman Catholic Church & Chapel (built around 1922), Bedford Park Zoo (!), Barnes Regional Airport (!), Hennepin County Courthouse (& adjacent jail complex). There are also plenty of shopping options like: Walmart Supercenter (~$30 per item); FivePoint Shopping mall (~$60 per item); Stroud’s Department store (~$50 per item); Aldi’s grocery store (~$40 per item); etc., makingLittleElm easily accessible for all sortsOf needs!!
