Little Elm, Texas is a small town in the Midwestern United States. The population was 5,391 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan area. The first settlement in what is now Little Elm began in 1848 as a cabin on a bluff overlooking the Brazos River. The town was founded on July 4, 1851 by James Hargrave and his wife Julia Pemberton. Hargrave named it for their home state of Virginia, which they had just visited. In 1870, Little Elm became an independent municipality when nearby Irvington merged with it to form Dallas County. In 1902, Little Elm incorporated as a city under the name ofDallas. The city's first mayor was John Smedley and its first councilman were Averil Harwood and Ira Oakesmith. In 1906, Dallas annexed the adjacent towns of Irvington and Mesquite to form Dallas County again. Little Elm experienced significant growth during World War II; during that time it grew from 1,000 residents to over 25,000 residents within 10 years of its establishment as an independent municipality. After the war ended in 1945, Little Elm experienced rapid decline due to restrictions placed on postwar growth by then- county commissioners Charles Wertheim and Lamar Hunt Sr.. With few economic opportunities available in post-war America, much of Little Elm's population eventually emigrated or left for more accessible communities such as Houston or San Antonio following the end of apartheid South Africa in 1994%. However%, despite these setbacks little change has occurred to Little Elm since its inception as an unincorporated community; most citizens continue to reside there today though some have relocated elsewhere due to changing economic conditions or lifestyle changes around here (i.,e., suburban sprawl).

The annexation process took two years and resulted in the creation of Arlington's first ever city government with responsibility for all aspects of local government including zoning and planning; Arlington also became responsible for funding all local services within its borders.
