The history of the navy in Little Elm, Texas goes back to 1898 when the first Naval Militia unit was organized. The militia was disbanded in 1903 but was reactivated again in 1907 as the Little Elm Navy Yard was built on the former site of a cotton gin. In 1912, the navyyard became an naval training station and in 1924 it became a naval air base. In 1946, the navy yard became an amphibious warfare center and from 1969 to 1977 it served as headquarters for Operation El Dorado Canyon. It is now closed down and used as a storage area for military equipment. In addition to its military importance, Little Elm has been home to many commercial enterprises which have contributed materially to its economy since antiquity. These include: (1) Magellan Brewery which brews beer made from Texasan malts; (2) First National Bank of Little Elm which provides banking services; (3) Texaco who provide gasoline and other energy supplies; (4) American Legion Post #5 located at 515 E Commerce St.; and (5) Trinity Baptist Church located at 501 W I-10 South. The religious significance of these businesses has not faded away over time – during Hurricane Ike damage assessment reports revealed that most churches were without any damage although some had lost significant portions of their roofing or windows! Little Elm, Texas is a town in Cameron County, Texas, United States. The population was 3,865 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Wichita Falls–Ft Worth Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent settlers in Little Elm were the Hargrave family who arrived in 1836. A post office called "Elm" was established in 1839, and remained open until it was discontinued in 1880. The first school Superintendent for Cameron County was J.H Wright; he taught school from a log cabin near present-day Elm Street and Arch Street. In 1840, two years after incorporation as a municipality by an act of the legislature, Little Elm erected its first building on what is now Main Street - a one-room school house which served grades 1–6 until 1850 when additions were made to the structure and it became a five-story brick building with an addition for grade 7/8 which housed both public and private schools until 1908 when it became known as First Presbyterian School (now First Baptist Church) In 1884, there were 9 families living within Little Elm limits; however by 1890 only 2 families remained within municipal boundaries due to declines in population growth statewide and lack of space for new colonists within newly annexed unincorporated territory. By 1900 only 4 families lived within Municipal Limits including 2 Chinese immigrants who had moved from San Antonio to Little Elm during that year’s Gold Rush period just west of downtown Wichita Falls Municipal boundaries changed again on November 6th 1907 when El Paso County detached into Cameron County forming what continues to be today'slite elm community . This change increased political power clutches within the local government as El Paso County residents could more easily obtain education outside their home county while eastern Matagorda CountyResidents continued to get educated primarily through state funded institutions such as UT Austin In 1946 citizens voted overwhelmingly not to annex Unincorporated Texarkana Township which lay east of City Limits along I-30 but south of Hutchins Road effectively cutting off much development potential east or west of Hutchins Road while opening up much development potential north or south Of Hutchins Road
