The history of Navy deployed gift history in Mercedes, Texas goes back to the early 1800s when sailors from the USS Constitution sailed into town to trade goods and services. The town was named after General James K. Polk, who served as President of the United States in 1845-46. The town’s first store was built on Main Street in 1851 by a group of merchants from Houston. In 1865, Commodore John G. Perry led a military expedition that visited what is now Mercedes and named it for General Polk. For many years, the city’s only means of transportation was horsedrawn carriages pulled by donkeys or horses. In 1898, during World War I, the US Naval vessel USS Maine sank offload supplies for German submarines at sea off Brownsville Bayou in Texas after stranding on a beach near present day Mexicali City. As a result of this event, American sailors became known as “Manchurian Men” because they had helped operate and maintain some of Germany’s most important naval vessels at sea during World War I. One such sailor was Commander John Fetterman (USNR) who served aboard the USS Maine until he transferred to the USS Constellation (CV-1) shortly before its sinking on April 15th 1915 while convoying Allied warships en route to Gallipoli Peninsula following operations against Turkey known as Operation Anzac (1915). Mercedes also played an important role in WWII when Nazi Germany occupied southern France through Operation Torch which began on November 8th 1942 and ended three days later when Allied forces bombed Hamburg Airport killing over 2,000 people including 500 Germans civilians working for Lufthansa Airlines Flight 968 which crashed into a residential area near Cannes French Riviera killing all 49 passengers and seven crew members including Captain Reinhold Messerschmidt with his two young children; future Chancellor Gerhard Schröder attended school here between 1940-1945; post war development included new shopping malls being built along with other industrial growth such as automobiles production beginning at GMC Truck Plant #1 opened in 1951 followed by Ford Motor Company plant #2 located adjacent to SHAW Research Laboratories where scientists developed the world's first polypropylene tarpaulin manufacturing plant; Stedman Farms closed their abortion clinic located across FM 727 from downtown where patients could have abortions without fear of legal prosecution which continued until 1973 public health officials moved their operation to nearby Manger Hospital As one can see from this short overview, there has been significant change/development within Mercedes over time that has impacted both everyday life inside and outside of the city limits since 1898!

Mercedes, Texas is a town in Montgomery County, Texas, United States. The population was 2,812 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dallas–Fort Worth metropolitan area. The town was founded by Texans with African American slaves as their workers on a cotton plantation in 1836. The town name derived from Spanish "mesquite" which means "haystack." The first post office opened in 1838 and the first store was built in 1841. A water tower was built in 1847 and two churches were built that year: Our Lady of Peace and St. John's Episcopal Church. In 1865, a school building was erected for students attending public schools located on Main Street south of Railroad Avenue east of Park Row Road. In 1870, an opera house (later known as the Philharmonic Hall) replaced the school building and it served as the main theater for many years until it burned down in 1951. In 1902, Mercedes annexed oak Creek Township to its boundaries making it one municipality with two townships totaling . In 1923, Mercedes annexed Cedar Hill to its boundaries making it three municipalities with four townships totaling . On December 15, 1925, Mercedes annexed White Settlement to its boundaries making it one municipality with five townships totaling tract land measuring 100 acres including a small pond where Philip Jourdan's home stood until 1922 when he sold it to developers who razed the structure and replaced it with shopping malls while leaving behind extensive virgin forest which has been preserved as a State Historical Landmark since 1978 (). In 1948-1949 General Motors began production at their plant north of downtown Houston along I-45 near Uptown Boulevard. This led to development around what is now Midtown Houston including areas now known as Downtown Austin include parts of this section of town south of I-45 just past Loop 410 also known then as McKinney Rd/I-35W
