In 1940, when World War II began with Germany’s invasion of Belgium, many Texans returned home to find their states were already engaged in conflict; Pearland remained largely undisturbed as an agricultural center with routine family farm activities interrupted only by wartime production shortages that kept prices high for local goods and made imports necessary for essential household items such as gasoline and food staples.
