The Port Arthur Museum of History and Art has a collection of over 150 army gift items that date back to the early 1800s. The museum’s small but interesting collection of army memorabilia is open to the public from 9am-5pm every day, except Mondays. One of the earliest items in the museum’s collection is an American flag Preservation Society artifact from 1892. This artifact is donated by Mrs. Fenton Longstreth, who was also an active member of the society. In 1949, Fort Worth Army Base donated a new rifle range and drill field to Port Arthur County. The donation was in honor of General John J. Pershing, who had served as Commanding Officer at Fort Worth Army Base from 1917-1924. In 1954, Fort Worth City Council donated another drill field to PortArthur County for use by the military units stationed there. These donations were in honor of Colonel James Hancey (1863-1945), Commandant and Superintendent at Ft Worth Army Base during World War II and afterwards Commander at Camp Bowie near Arlington Texas. In 1961, American Legion post #109 gave away a set of Ulysses S Grant Memorabilia as a war prize for their annual Riflemen game played at that location. That same year, Ft Worth Post #1 gifted an American Flag Preservation Society artifact to the museum as well as a number of other items in tribute to local soldiers who had died in World War II or Korea. The first large group of army gifts arrived inPort Arthur when Midland Bank organized a fund-raiser for Mayor William Clementson on July 15th 1907 in order to help pay for erecting new city hall building on Main Street which then housed the jail and court house at that time (the present day county courthouse). On November 3rd 1907 Midland Bank sponsored another event benefiting Mayor Clementson’s campaign fund which raised $3200 dollars with many local businesses contributing goods/services such as flowers, candy bars etcetera . It should be noted that this type of fundraising event was not unusual among banks during this period given that these organizations often acted as social clubs098couponing sales tax profits from successful retail endeavors) .
