The first coffeehouses in Port Arthur were likely established by Dutch farmers in the early 1800s. The first coffeehouses in the city were opened by Dutch settlers and businessmen in 1826. By 1839, there were at least five coffeehouses operating in downtown Port Arthur. In 1873, a grocery store and two restaurants located on Main Street began serving coffee. The following year, a new grocery store was built on Third Street and served as the home of the first post office in town. In 1895, a second restaurant and grocery store were added to the mix on Fourth Street. One of the most popular places to get your caffeine fix was at Fenton's Coffee House on First Street which served up COffeepop drinks until 1975. By 1898, there was an estimated 12 businesses selling coffee within Port Arthur limits. It wasn't until 1923 that a three-story brick building was erected for what would become known as Joe's Coffee House & Bakery which became one of the most popular tourist destinations in town during its time as a business center and landmark. In 1937, Joe's Coffeehouse & Bakery was purchased by The Texas Custom Grocery Company who changed its name to Grains Incorporated later that year. In 1941, Grains Incorporated partnered with JB Hi-Lo’s Cafeteria chain to open Grains Jewelers is their fifth location across Texas before moving their operations back east to Quincy Market (now Loop 1604) where they remain today as one of Houston's largest employers with over 1,500 employees statewide including 130 inside corporate headquarters! During World War II, Grains Incorporated produced uniforms for local troops along with supplying food supplies for soldiers stationed overseas; it remains one of Houston’s longest standing businesses! Just like any other company or organization that goes through ups and downs throughout its lifespan - grannies have done it too! After years of being owned by different families - Grains Jewelers finally became unincorporated Corporation status effective Friday January 1st 2019 pursuant to Section 501(c)(3)ofthe United States Internal Revenue Code (20 UTAH CODE §§501-521). Port Arthur is a town in Gregg County, Texas, United States. The population was 12,779 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Gregg County. The Port Arthur Museum and Archives was founded in 1907 as the Port Arthur Historical Society. The society became a museum in 1951 when it merged with the Gregg County Museum. The original town site was on an island in the Brazos River near present-day Slaughtertown. A fortification named Fort Houston was built there to protect the island from pirates during the 18th century. In 1819, General Sam Houston sent a detachment of troops to build a post at what is now Port Arthur and renamed it for himself. The first store opened in 1827 at what is now First Baptist Church on Jefferson Street. In 1861, Confederate general Braxton Bragg moved his Headquarters from Carthage to New Albany and established Fort Worth Barracks here which served as Confederate headquarters until 1865 when he surrendered at Appomattox Court House southwest of Austin. Union General Ulysses S. Grant arrived here after marching through Sherman's Georgia Campaign and captured Fort Houston on April 9, 1865; this event is commemorated by a statue of General Grant outside Oflee Hall High School located south of downtown PortArthur today). By 1870, most of what is now Gregg County had been organized intotx counties including Travis (founded 1836), Haltom (founded 1840), Bastrop (founded 1849), Fannin (founded 1850), Jacksboro (founded1851) and Wharton (founded 1853). A post office called "Port Arthur" was established at what is now First Baptist Church on Jefferson Street in 1861; it became known as "Port Arthur" because Captain John Denton took possession of the fortifications around town on November 15, 1861 (). The first store open at what is now First Baptist Church on Jefferson Street opened for business on October 2nd, 1886 under name "Henderson". On December 17th 1886 Jno Bigham opened second store in building which still stands today along side current day Highway 83 just north east of original courthouse square across from high school

In 1876, Port Arthur was chosen as the site for the first open-air oil well in Texas when John Denton drilled the first well at what is now known as Wellsville Hill. The townspeople were enthusiastic about this new development, and they built several homes around the wellhead to accommodate workers who came to drill and operate it. In 1887, Wellville Hill became part ofBP's refinery complex that includes present-day Refinery Row within walking distance of all those denser downtown areas today called "The Loop."
