Port Arthur, Texas is a city in the U.S. state of Texas and the county seat of Grayson County. The population was 31,693 at the 2010 census, making it the largest city in Grayson County. It is part of the Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan area. The first Europeans to enter Texas were traders and explorers from Spain in 1821, followed by American entrepreneurs such as James Kenedy and Stephen Austin. In 1836, Mexican General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna decided to fight for Mexico rather than Grant US independence and sacked Port Arthur without warning its inhabitants on December 12 after a day of bombardment that destroyed many homes and killed most of the town's citizens including women and children. Commodore John Denny took advantage of the resultant vacuum created by Santa Anna's retirement to establish Fort Taylor at what is now downtown Port Arthur on February 14, 1837; he called it "the new Castro." At Fort Taylor began a period during which American forces conducted annual campaigns against Mexican insurgents attempting to overthrow Mexican rule along the borderlands betweenTexas and New Mexico Territory. In 1840–1841 Captain James Fenton sailed upriver from San Francisco via Cape Horn to trade with Texans smugglers operating out of Victoria (now Corpus Christi) while exploring portions of today's north central Texas region then still under Spanish control; he discovered an open water route across Trinity Bayou (now Brazoria River) leading northwest into what is now east Houston County through present-day San Angelo before reaching Brownsville about southeast of today's Port Aransas Naval Air Station on November 1, 1840 Lieutenant Colonel José Cámpora led an expedition organized by Rear Admiral David Dixon Porter under orders from Commodore John Denny searching for a land route southward across Texas Bayou (today's Red River Valley) connecting New Orleans with California overland via Austin or El Paso but found no corridor until January 8, 1841 when they discovered Prairie du Chien (now Pierre), Wisconsin (). This discovery led to development plans for what would become Fort Polk overlooking Prairie Du Chien Harbor on Lake Houston just beyond modern day Rice University where Majestic Airways has their headquarters since 1949
Port Arthur was founded by the Comanche Empire in 1836 as a trading post on the Brazos River. The town grew quickly, and in 1852 it became the first city in Texas. The area around present-day Port Arthur was designated as part of Austin County in 1876, and growth slowed until after World War II when new industries began to grow there such as shipbuilding and aircraft manufacturing. In 1965, Port Arthur was renamed for General James Hogg, who had fought in the Mexican-American War and later served as governor of Texas.
