There have been many military deployments in Port Arthur, Texas. The first military deployment was during the Mexican-American War in 1846. Then, in 1898, the United States entered World War I and Port Arthur became a naval base. In 1945, the United States went into World War II and the city became a port of embarkation for troops coming to fight in Europe. After World War II ended, the cityspeople decided that they would like to keep their military history alive by hosting an annual event called "Halloween on the Bayou." The events started out as a small party for local residents only but soon enough, other communities around town were invited to join in on the fun. Each year since then, there has been at least one military deployment taking place in or around Port Arthur. One of the most famous deployments happened when General George Custer and his Seventh Cavalry Regiment came to town for a parade on Halloween night in 1946. The event was so big that it required multiple days of preparation and spawned numerous jokes about how things might have gone differently if Custer had not died during battle that same year. Another well-known deployment took place during Operation Neptune's Spear when more than 7500 American soldiers were deployed to Korea in order to help oppose Japan's expansionism into East Asia. This also led to some memorable moments such as when General MacArthur walked through downtown Port Arthur wearing nothing but a ToeJam & Earl shirt (he thought it looked cool). Nowadays, Halloween events are usually smaller scale with just local residents invited instead of generals or admirals comeoing. Port Arthur is a town in Harris County, Texas, United States. The population was 5,867 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Houston–Sugar Land metropolitan area. The first Europeans to visit what is now Port Arthur were those from Spain on October 14, 1836. They named the town San Antonio de Bexar after their religious center in that city. A post office was established at present-day Port Arthur on December 3, 1839, and remained open until it was discontinued on July 10, 1906. In 1845 Robert Hogg built his sawmill and trading post near present-day downtown Port Arthur. Hogg became known as "The Father of PortArthur". In 1861 Stephen Fenton opened a store and mail station at what is now Elmendorf Avenue and Main Street east of downtown. The first school in town was built in 1865 by Mrs. Jnoeph Pemberton with funds given by Mrs. John Dimmick of Houston for educational purposes in that area west of Sixth Street between Second and Third Avenues. In 1870 James Waddell purchased land east of Elmendorf Avenue opposite First National Bank building for $5 per acre (3 hectares). He began to build a cotton gin adjacent to his mill which he named the Waddell Cotton Gin Company Limited after himself and his father-in-law Major General James Polk Waddell (1814–98), who served as Commandant General United States Volunteers during the Mexican War (1846–48). On April 12, 1875 Mr. Waddell married Miss Emma Lipscomb at her home on East Main Street; they raised three children: Samuel E., Franklin M., Jr., who married Lillie Ann Barger on November 6, 1951; Joyce Culp Knechtel; both are deceased; and Vernon Gentry Waddell III (born February 7th 1948), an Air Force officer stationed at Offutt Air Force Base since 1978 who served as City Clerk from January 1st 2001 until September 15th 2006 Mayor Pro Tem from 2005 through 2007 under then LtGov Tom Legere when he lost reelection due to term limits set by state law before he took office Mayor Pro Tem again effective October 15th 2007 . A post office called Fort Worth had been established in 1840 but failed to take off because there wasn't enough business there! Therefore another post office also went up soon after - US Post Office #2 at Corinth – this one lasted for about six months before being closed because there just wasn't much traffic coming through! Texas State Road 9 runs through eastern outskirts of town just south of Interstate 610 where I-610 splits into two concurrent highways concurrently exit #1 & #2 lead northbound down Elmendorf Ave past Sam's Liquor Store onto IH 10W & we join US 290E which leads out West towards Dallas

Port Arthur, Texas is a city in Archer County, Texas, United States. The population was 2,868 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Archer County. The town of Port Arthur was founded by James Dooley and others in 1867 as a transportation stop on the Santa Fe Railroad. In 1876, the town became part of Huntsville when that city was formed from parts of Archer and Tyler Counties. By 1907, Port Arthur had become an important shipping point for wheat and other crops grown in East Texas. The Great Depression led to reductions in trade and production at the port; however, it continued to be an important center for commerce until after World War II when it declined as a result of suburbanization. In recent years, some development has taken place around the old port including new housing developments and businesses along with a museum dedicated to maritime history which opened in 2001.
In 1836, when the Republic of Texas was founded, Port Arthur was one of its first settlements. It became a center for agriculture and cattle ranching in the area, and began to grow as a commercial center. In 1881, the city was renamed Austin after Ulysses S. Grant, president of the United States at the time. It continued to grow through the 20th century, becoming one of the largest cities in Texas.
