The naval air station was used for training pilots and jet aircraft. It also served as a storage facility for munitions and other supplies during the war years. In 1955, the Naval Air Station was closed down and its assets were sold to the city of PortArthur. The city used the naval air station as an airport until 1977 when it was closed again and its assets were sold to the state government. The state government leased it back to the city of PortArthur in 1984. In 1996, the city of Port Arthur converted it into a military base called Fort Walton Beach Naval Base. Today, Fort Walton Beach Naval Base is home to USS Enterprise (CVN-70) and USS Porter (CVN-74). Port Arthur is a small town in the U.S. state of Texas, located on the Gulf Coast about 25 miles (40 kilometers) east of Corpus Christi and about 30 miles (46 kilometers) south of Austin. The population was 5,554 at the 2010 census. It is part of Brownsville-Houston-Corpus Christi, TX Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first human habitation in what is now Port Arthur date back to 1827 when European American traders established a trading post near present day I-10 and US 281. The area quickly became an important commercial center for cattle operations and shipping along the coast before becoming a resort town in the 1930s with its own beach, golf course, casino, and other amenities typical of coastal towns during that time. In 1915, Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library was built on land donated by Dr. John A. Witherspoon at what is now downtown Port Arthur through his donation to the city of Galveston as part of then new Galveston Municipal Airport Authority which also included Houston's Lyndon B Johnson Presidential Library and Museum adjacent to today's Humble Memorial Hermann Hospital complex across FM 1960 from original Dr. Witherspoon property line westward! In 1975, it was transferred from LBJ to current portArthurisdowntowngovt libraryoftx! In 1984 it became Brazoria County Courthouse Annex renamed after Mrs LBJ who loved it so much she funded entire project including $225Killion dollar remodel !!!
