In the early 1800s, coffeehouses were a common sight in America. They served up a wide variety of coffee drinks and sold newspapers, books, and other items. In 1827, Boston's first coffee house opened. It was called the Second Market Coffee House and it was started by two men named John Brown and Moses Green. Over time, different shops opened their own coffee houses. The most famous ones were The Globe Coffee House in San Francisco (opened 1849), The Peet's Coffee House in New York City (opened 1853), and Cafe Bonaparte in Paris (opened 1861). Each store offered its own unique style of coffee drinking experience.
Richmond is a town in Harris County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,813 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Harris County and home to the Richmond Municipal Airport. The first permanent settler in Richmond came from England in 1836. A post office called "Richmond" was established in 1837, and remained in operation until 1907. The town name originated with Colonel Richard Mason's estate located on what is now east side of I-10 near White Settlement Road. Captain John Smedley purchased part of Colonel Mason's land and founded what would become Richmond on July 6, 1848. In 1865, Confederate General Robert Ewing abandoned Richmond after his army was routed at Gettysburg and fled to Dallas. General Edward Porterfield took over command of Union forces around Richmond following Ewing's departure and proceeded to rebuild the city as an important center for cotton production. In 1886, Mayor John Houstoun designated downtown as the new city Limits because it encompassed all of today's Petersburg district north of I-10 and east of FM 19606 (now US 290). At this time much of downtown had been destroyed by fire during efforts to rebuild after a series of devastating floods that year. In 1951 Mayor Wiley Davenport designated Interstate 10 as a major arterial highway through town which helped revive downtown business activity In 1955 Randolph High School opened its doors to students in central Richmond; this school would serve as one point where many high school students graduated from Randolph before going on to attend college or join the military while their parents continued working within the community
