Richmond is a city located in the U.S. state of Texas, on the banks of the San Antonio River. According to the 2010 census, its population was 110,inline with that of Austin and one million residents more than Dallas-Fort Worth combined. It is part of the Dallas–Fort Worth metropolitan area. The name Richmond comes from "Riverside" which refers to a wide open space along the river front where goods could be unloaded for shipment downriver and then sold in bulk at lower prices during late afternoon or evening hours before being transported back upriver for sale again early in the morning. The first permanent European settlement in what is now Richmond was by Spanish traders on an island in what is now downtown San Antonio called Rancho de las Almas (ranchement of Alamosa). On December 6, 1800, Mexico granted Louisiana to United States under President James Kenedy as part of Treaty 7. As part of this treaty, Spain ceded land including what are now Richmond and Travis County to American control;[1] this included most of today's Arlington County and much parts of today's Houston County.[2] In 1836, Mexican General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna destroyed some cannons used by American forces occupying Bexar County during his attempt to quell an uprising there against his rule—an event known as Battle Creek Massacre. A group led by Major Nathaniel Banks began burning properties near present-day Jacksboro Road following Santa Anna's escape from prison later that year. This event became known as The Gates Rage after Major Banks' men burned several homes near present-day Interstate 10 eastbound lanes towards Temple University while other drivers stayed inside their cars waiting for authorities to clear the scene.[3][4][5][6] In 1837, General Sam Houston bought about 8 square miles (20 km2) northward along Buffalo Bayou (now Kingwood Drive) from Juan Seguin,[7] who had been appointed governor general by President Martin Van Buren,[8][9] and laid outHouston Townsite on May 5th[10]. In 1839 Union troops under Majerus burned nearby Gonzales Adobe Walls while retreating from Bexar County after capturing it from Mexican forces at Palo Alto Bridge over Buffalo Bayou during operations code-named Prairie Fire campaign; entire fortifications were destroyed except for some artillery which drifted downstream unharmed[11][12], resulting in souring relations between American commanders and Mexicans throughout much of Texas.[13][14] For many years thereafter Independence Hall served as both a public meeting place for local officials and a storage depot for army supplies overflowng when Fort Bend County Seat became available at Sam Rayburn House complex on December 12th 1840 following Harrisburg Agreement between Republic Of Texas & US Government wherein seat went vacant when US Senate moved into new Capitol Building across Congress Avenue from old Capitol building).[15]:290 At least one scholar has speculated that although annexation did not result in increased violence within Mexican border communities such as Brownsville or El Paso due largely to military efforts launched by United States Army commander Pio Pico instead,[16]:292Richmond saw more violence associated with Indian removal policies carried out by Ulysses S Grant rather than Mexican troops because "the Americans were using Force without Justification"[17]; see also Starr Campaign On April 15 1865 Confederate soldiers opened fire upon unarmed citizens attending a peace vigil organized by Freedmen's Aid Society outside Market Square just south of City Hallsteps leading up main stairsOwings Mills Rd., killing two people: Johnnie Cochran Sr., age 36 years old son ol Johnnie Cochran Jr., age 24 years old husband o Mrs Ellison Wray alias Mary Jane Guthrie who resided at 4 Orchard Street [18]:1Those killed herein have permanently forever closed our Capital city’s only public thoroughfare One family lost their home valued around $600 dollars Their loss will sadden all those living here until further notice

Richmond, Texas was founded in 1836 by General Sam Houston as a military post on the San Antonio River.
