The first European settlers arrived in the 1820s and were primarily Texans who founded Fort Worth and other towns in what is now Eastland County. In 1836, a group of Mexicans led by José JoaquÃn Cámpora set out from Nuevo Laredo on their way to Santa Fe. They reached Roma on November 11 and began building a settlement there. The town was named for Italian immigrants Giovanni Battista Romano and his brother Pietro Romano, who had come to Texas in 1827 as part of the Mexican–American War expedition under General Antonio Armijo. A mission called San Francisco de la Garza was established at Roma in 1837 and operated until 1840. A school was built here in 1838 and served as both a academy and church until it burned down in 1840. The town continued to grow however; by 1850, it had over 100 residents. However, due to problems with malaria (the cause of which is still unknown), Roma soon withdrew from polite society altogether and became known as an "aloof oasis" characterized by its primitive lifestyle, lack of education and social isolation among its own people. In 1865, during Reconstruction efforts following the American Civil War, Arizona Territory was created including much of present-day Eastland County including Roma; this included many of the same settler groups that had populated RomanodtOWN since before American independence (eastern Mexican pioneers such as José Miguel GarcÃa de León who came overland via New Mexico).
