In 1906, José Castañeda organized a group of farmers to learn about growing and marketing coffee. They set up a cooperative, which became the first large-scale commercial coffee grower in Texas. In 1912, Castañeda sold his share of the business to Pancho Villa and moved to Mexico City. In 1933, Manuel GarcÃa founded El Gordo Coffee Company in San Benito with help from businessman Charles Fenton. GarcÃa continued to operate El Gordo until he died in 1984. After GarcÃa's death, his son Jesús GarcÃa took over as president and owner of El Gordo Coffee Company until he passed away in 1997. From 1951 until 1960, Francisco Gomez ran Goya Coffee Shop at 5th & Broadway in downtown San Benito. Francisco Gomez was born into a Spanish family that operated cafes throughout central Texas before moving to San Benito in 1915 where he worked at various stores including The National Guard Armory on Franklin Street (now part of UTSA). The town was founded by General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna and his family, who left Mexico to seek new opportunities in Texas. The new settlement quickly became known for its fertile land, rich mineral resources, and excellent water supply. Today, San Benito is a lively small town that retains many of the traditional values and customs of its founders. The history of SanBenito began with two families: the López de Santa Anna Family from Mexico City and José Maria López from Puebla. Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna's father was a general in Mexican Independence War against Spanish rule. His mother was one of twelve children born to Santiago and MarÃa Guerrero López. When Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna went off to fight in 1824 as part of the Mexican army under President Vicente Fernández del Castillo, his father took him back home to help run the family farm. After Santana returned home, he started school at 12 years old so that he could learn how to run a farm himself someday! In 1836, General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna moved his family to what is now called "The Hill" near present-day San Benito on account of increasing population density along the Grande Rios River due to railroads being built nearby (the first railroad within Texas crossed into California). In 1835-36 Antonio Lopez purchased 640 acres north of present day San Benito for $6 per acre (this amount would be worth more than $100 million today!). This purchase set off a permanent growth trend for "The Hill". By 1840 there were over 1,000 people living on The Hill! San Benito quickly became known as an agricultural center due to its good land quality and access to irrigation systems through the river. It also boasted some significant technological advances during this time including an early cotton gin developed by Captain John Sutter (1810-1886) which processed cottonseed kernels into cloth; three miles long main road connecting towns east and west; two churches – Our Lady of Loreto Basilica built in 1850s; brick schools built between 1840s and 1860s; four hospitals - San Francisco Hospital opened in 1861 (now The University Medical Center at Houston), La Fonda Hospital opened in 1865 (now Memorial Hermann Hospital), and Samaritan Hospital opened in 1870 (later renamed Stritch County Memorial Hospital). In addition,San Benito had several breweries - Gassaway Brewery founded circa 1840; Second Road Brewery founded ca 1890;and Third Road Brewery founded about 1910-. Some notable businesses include Don Carlos Vaccaro’s grocery store which became one of America’s largest food retailers after opening adjacent to First National Bank building on Main Street ca 1830/30s; Mrs Mason Coleman’s bakery which operated from about 1830 until her death ca 1911/12; J M Chalfant saddlery which operated until 1862 when it relocated across I Hwy 183 from downtown area.; Dr Wm Weaver’s physician office complex constructed about 1850/60Skaftel & Sons lumberyard established c 1880Sporting goods store established about 1830S post office established circa 1800

The remnants of San Benito emerged as an agricultural community again after the war until its extinction in 2000.
