Since the beginning of time, San Benito has been a military town. The first military post in San Benito was established in 1835 and it served as a garrison for the Santa Anna Battalion. In 1847, the Texas Rangers were stationed here and began operations against Mexican bandits. The fortifications around San Benito became known as "The Fortification of SanBenito." In 1861, during the American Civil War, General Sam Houston's army camped at this location before moving on to nearby Fort Worth. The fortifications were destroyed by Confederate forces in 1865 but were rebuilt and used as a cavalry training ground until 1898. In World War II, San Benito played an important role in the Battle of Bataan. Filipinoangels from this community fought alongside U.S. Marines to help stop Japanese forces from taking Manila Bay. After the war, many of these veterans lived and worked in San Benito until they retired or left for good in the early 1970s. Today, there are still active military members living here who contribute to local defense efforts through their reserve duty or service with federal agencies like Customs and Border Protection or Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
San Benito is a small town in Texas, located about 25 miles southwest of Austin. The population was 2,624 at the 2010 census. It is part of the El Paso–Arlington, TX Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name San Benito comes from Spanish and means "san" (meaning "place") and Benito (a diminutive suffix meaning "young man"). The first settler in what is now SanBenito County was Manuel Alvarez who arrived in 1829. Juan Bautista de Anza founded the mission here in 1836. In 1868, land grant #1 was given to José Antonio Vargas and family by President James Kenedy. In 1916, when county seat moved from Austin to this location due to population growth, SanBenito became the sole borough in the newly created El Paso–Arlington area. In 1939, during World War II, San Benito served as one of 10 American communities within 9-mile radius of Fort Bliss Army Base that were designated for production of munitions products under then-new wartime regulations governing military production. This included producing crude oil for Japan which had just entered World War II as well as other items such as automobiles and plane parts needed for war production. When Fort Bliss closed after the war ended it left an immense vacuum in local industry which led to increased joblessness among local residents over ensuing years culminating with mass layoffs following deregulation at state and federal levels that began shortly thereafter throughout much of Texas beginning with SanBenitan's incorporation into El Paso County on January 1st 1959 The economy has slowly recovered since those dark times but many jobs remain unfilled because they are located outside of metropolitan areas or because companies have relocated elsewhere within Texas or nationally . San Benito is a city in the Mexican state of Guerrero, located on the right bank of an Río Grande estuary. The population was 14,898 as of 2010. It is the seat of San Benito County. The first Europeans to arrive in what is now San Benito were French settlers in 1795. They named the place "Château-de-la-Rivière" after the Châteaux de la Rivière and De la Rivière near Quebec City. In 1821, Antonio López de Santa Anna founded a mission at San Fernando Rey de las Nieves (now part of Monterrey). The mission soon became known as La Purísima Concepción y Santiago del Niño, or "the Purest Conception and Saint Daniel's Child." In 1839, José Joaquín Bernal Díaz granted land to Michael Collins for construction of a railroad through Guerrero from Mexico City to Texas. The town began to grow quickly because people who had no other place to go wanted to get on the train. By 1840, there were over 1,000 residents in San Benito. The first American post office was established in San Benito on December 10, 1843 by James Bunning and others with help from General Antonio López de Santa Anna. On February 15th 1861 local citizens John Waddell and Nathaniel Mott organized a company called "Nathaniel Mott's Texas Rangers" which helped protect US interests during the Mexican–American War; these men are considered the founders of Uptown Dallas today. During World War II thousands of Japanese Americans living in California were interned without any legal process or compensation here at San Benito until their release under Operation Showa on April 19th 1945 which ended Japan's occupation of our country; many businesses including this one closed during that time as well due to hard times back home being experienced by all Americans at that time ><
The first European to visit San Benito was the Spanish sailor Francisco de Ocampo in 1795. The town's namesake, Juan Bautista de Anza, who explored and charted the Mexican coast in 1769, also made an landfall here on his way from Santa Fe to Monterey. In 1821, Antonio López y Costilla founded a small mission here and named it San Fernando del Diablo after the hill that overlooked the town. The mission was abandoned in 1835, but some of its artifacts remain today at the Texas State Fairgrounds.
