The town of San Benito, Texas is located in Hudspeth County, just east of Austin. The population was 1,898 at the 2000 census and 2,032 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Austin-Round Rock metropolitan area. In 1836, Don Miguel de Arana founded what would become San Benito as a small rancho on a bend in the Brazos River. He named it after his father's home province of Béarn, Spain. The Aranas had six children and only one daughter married into another rancho; her husband purchased the Rancho San José nearby in 1851 for $6,000 cash and two horses. John Wesley Powell passed through Hudspeth County on his way to Mount Rushmore National Monument in 1903 and noted that "the people hereabouts are very friendly" while stopping at San Benito Ranch on Sept 12th (now Dayton). In 1911 Congressman John Worth proposed creating an airfield (today's Travis Air Force Base) near San Benito to accommodate military bombers flying over Corpus Christi during World War I ground operations against German submarines off Mexico City. A vote was taken on September 25th but no action was taken because there were too few members to pass a bill! In 1935 US Senator Huey Long introduced S 1124 which would have given ownership of Travis Air Force Base to the city of Austin if it had been approved by Congress - again no action! However due to pressure from local farmers Action 6 (of the American Federation of Teachers), led by school superintendent Driscoll Potter Morrison (1914-1989), Congressman Lamar Alexander sponsored H 1175 which became law on December 3rd 1935 giving Travis AFB to Austin instead! In 1941 Japan bombed Pearl Harbor causing widespread destruction including several homes in town where families lived together until 1945 when they all moved away because they were considered enemy property under Japanese occupation policy! After World War II ended%, many Americans returned home and began rebuilding their lives; however some remain living in town today as retirees or visiting family & friends.
