However, in recent years it has seen some growth in businesses such as tourism and agriculture. As a result of its history and growth potential, Terrell is one of Texas' most proud cities.
On February 17, 1836, the Republic of Texas was created from the Mexican land grant of Alamo. The town of Terrell was founded in 1836 on a tract of land that had been purchased by James Hogg and his wife, Sarah. It is said that Hogg named the town after General Sam Houston because he thought it would be an honor to name a county after one of America's most distinguished generals. The community gradually grew and by 1850 had a population of around 100 people. In 1857, the Republic prospered under the leadership of Governor John Fenton and development slowed down until 1861 when Confederate forces invaded Texas and occupied much of the state.
