Caulkins in 1868, and it still operates as a family-owned business today. The store has been a mainstay of the community for over 150 years! Founded in 1881 as a small farming community called "Terrell", the town grew rapidly during the late 19th century and early 20th century due to its location on I-10 and its access to cotton fields and other agricultural resources. Growth stalled during World War II, as Terrell was primarily an industrial center for oil production in nearbyHouston. However, growth resumed after the war when Terrell became one of the few rural areas in Gregg County to become fully urbanized. In recent years, Terrell has regained some of its lost economic prominence through development of private industry and tourism; however, most residents continue to rely heavily on agriculture for their income. Today's Terrell is named after Confederate General Braxton Bragg who fought in the American Civil War and later served as governor of Texas under President Andrew Johnson. The original spelling of "Braxton" was misspelled "Brayton". The first white settlers arrived in what is now Terrell around 1881 when they were driven out by Native Americans who had occupied the area for several centuries. A post office was established at what is now townsite on November 10, 1881, with James Hargrave serving as first mail carrier. By 1901, there were over 100 residents living in what would eventually become known as "Terrell". During World War II, many factories that manufactured items such as tanks or aircraft operated near or within blocks of town; this caused large traffic jams that could be seen from miles away. To avoid these jams and ensure continued production while incarcerated elsewhere during wartime efforts (such as being housed at Camp Kilmer), all local businesses closed down until 2pm Monday-Friday (later changed to 12pm) so that employees could go home and help their families manufacture munitions while they were not working/in school; this policy lasted until 1945 when it was replaced by a curfew system due to increased U S military activity nearby which led to more business closures riots across much larger metropolitan Areas throughout society following Pearl Harbor). In 1951 John Ladd co-founded Joplin Electric Cooperative along with his son Donnie Ladd III with high hopes for having electricity available cheaply enough so people wouldn't havetosacrifice dinner because they couldn't turn on their lights at night time like they did before WWII .
