Terrell, Texas is a small town located in Vernon County, Texas. The population was 1,890 at the 2000 census. It was founded in 1881 by James and Ruth Ann Terrell. The community became a city in 1907 and it retained its city status until 1970. In 1970, it reverted to its rural designation and has since been settled solely by farmers. The town has two schools: the public school serving grades K-12 and the private school serving grades 9-12. There is also a post office which opened in 1901.
Terrell was founded in 1879 by Charles W. Terrell, a cattleman and landowner. The town grew quickly, thanks to the booming cattle industry, and in 1912 Terrell became the first city in Texas to be incorporated. The city hosted its first municipal election in 1914 and continued to grow until it reached its current size of 85,000 residents in 1950.
