Watauga is a small town in Price County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,766 at the 2000 census. Watauga is named for the Creek word "watta" meaning "a large cottonwood tree." The first settler in Watauga was James A. McGee in 1859. McGee built a log cabin on his farmstead about two miles east of present-day Watauga. In 1865, Alexander McKay and his family settled here and began to plant crops and raise livestock. The townspeople quickly erected a courthouse and jail with funds they had collected from local farmers. In 1896, the state Legislature passed an act establishing Canyon Lake as the county's reservoir. As development continued into the 20th century, businesses mushroomed: lawyer John Prentice opened an office in 1907; carpenter Harry Cushing built a garage in 1912; store owner George Troup erected a blocky red barn in 1922 that became one of Watauga's earliest landmarks; Fenton Manufacturing Company installed electrician Charles Epps' new Siemens furnace in 1928; grocery store proprietor James Ladd opened his first store on Main Street in 1934; sawmill operator Tom Plummer added another four-story building to the mill complex around 1938; post office operated from 1940 to 1957 when it moved into its current building next door (now part of Baptist Church). On January 15, 1951 floodwaters destroyed most of downtown Watauga after cresting nearby Cedar River at . Although some damage occurred upstream near Sawmill Dam — including lost housing and fences — overall flooding only resulted in $2 million worth of damages ($ Today's value would be much greater if not for Millsaps Dam); this event remains one of history's most significant natural disasters hereabouts[1]. Millsaps Dam also created several impoundments which remain important today: Waco Lake (1972), Clear Fork Reservoir (1982), Elm Fork Reservoir (1988) and White Oak Bayou (1991).
