The town was first settled primarily by Cowboys who were needed on horseback during cattle drives that took place throughout the midwest. Over time however, other groups such as farmers also moved into Waxahachie including Germans and Irish immigrants who came seeking opportunity and education in America. In 1881, local businessman John Haney developed land east of Waxahachie which would later become Houston Heights. This development led to an increase in traffic through the community which caused many houses or businesses to be built along Garnet Street which became known as "the artery." In 1907, local dentist Drinaldo Ortiz opened his surgery at 10th & Garnet Streets which remains one of Texas' most popular dental hospitals today. Additionally, prior to World War II Waxahachie hosted annual Liberty Ball Parade where hundreds of people would parade down Garnet Street each year until it relocated down Westheimer Road in 1947 when Houston's first high school opened there!
