Wichita Falls was founded in 1881 as a small town on the banks of the Arkansas River. The town grew rapidly due to its location near Fort Worth and railroad connections. In 1923, Wichita Falls became an independent municipality and has since grown into one of the largest cities in Texas with over 145,000 residents. In 1872, John Clayton started developing what would become Wichita Falls through purchasing land along what is now US75 south of downtown from Manuel Castro de la Fuente y Costilla y Morellegrese (1820-1892). With this purchase, Clayton developed what would become one of America's most important cotton plantations - part of which remains active today as White Sands Cotton Juice Company - employing more than 1,500 people throughout three decades during its heyday between 1880-1920. Today's First National Bank Building which stands on land that once housed Clayton's plantation complex is one of Wichita Falls' oldest landmarks still standing within sight or reach of the city's citizens today! Clayton laid out streets grid fashion across 4 miles (6 km)of forested acreage while building homes for his employees near present day Elmira Road and Home Street - later designated as cornerstones of Main Street - thus creating "the Village" which continuedto grow until it anchored nearby Elmira Park late into the 20th century when development pressures forced incorporation onto Elmira Boulevard itself around 1930!.
