The community was founded by John Wesley Powell in 1872 after he and his family settled in what is now Midland County. In 1899, Wylie post office opened and became known as "Waco." After Railroads replaced stagecoaches as the primary means of transportation between Austin and Dallas in the early 20th century, Wylie grew to become one of the leading mail-order communities in Texas. The Wylie Cotton Mills were one of the largest cotton mills in America when they closed their doors in 1971. In addition to its role as a center for commerce and culture, Wylie has also played an important role duringtx history as a base for both Confederate forces during the Civil War and later National Guard units that served under President George H.W. Bush during Operation Desert Storm. In recent years, much attention has been paid to downtown Wylie's revitalization efforts which have included new restaurants, art galleries and retail stores along with new public works projects such as a renovated courthouse and updated city hall building

Wylie prospered until the early 1800s when the area around Wylie began to be flooded with rivers and creeks. This caused economic decline and social turmoil in Wylie. In 1847, local leaders decided to move the capital from Wylie to Austin because of this issue.
