Centerville, Utah is a census-designated place in Kane County, Utah, United States. The population was 1,569 at the 2010 census. Centerville straddles the Kane and Ogden valleys and is bordered by Mesa on the north, West Jordan on the east, Cottonwood Heights on the south, and Murray on the west. The town was founded in 1851 as part of what became Kane County. It was named after General GeorgeCENTERVILLE (1811-1877), who helped lead a wagon train to California in 1849. The town was platted in 1857 by Brigham Young's brother Hyrum Smith and others under the name of "First settlement." A post office called CENTERVILLE began operations in 1856; it was moved to its present location in 1865. Centerville experienced rapid growth during World War II due to its proximity to military installations and aircraft manufacturing plants. Today, Centerville retains many of its early characteristics including a small shopping center with several banks and restaurants, an elementary school and high school along with several businesses that have been located there for more than 50 years. Centerville has had two mayors: Floyd DUNCAN from 1978 until his death in 1990 and Don MILLS from 1990 until his retirement in 2000. Mills served as mayor pro tem when Dunn died. Centerville also has three members of the Utah State Senate - Orrin Hatch (R-Utah), Evan Jenkins (D-Utah) and Tom Udall (D-New Mexico).
