Clinton, Utah is a small town located in Davis County, Utah. The population was 2,865 at the 2010 census. Clinton is part of the Provo–Orem Metropolitan Statistical Area. Clinton was founded in 1868 by Captain Alfred H. Clinton and his wife Julia. It was named after General John C. Fremont's home state, New York, where he had been born in 1807. Clinton's post office opened in 1870 and continued operation until it closed in 1935. The first store on the site of present-day Clinton opened in 1872 and operated for eight years until it closed due to lack of business interest or competition from other stores nearby. A second store opened on the same lot in 1876 and operated for thirteen years before closing due to low sales volume or a lack of demand from surrounding towns. A third store was built on the site of present-day Clinton High School in 1889 and served as the town's only shopping center for thirty four years before it closed due to neglect or arson by local teenagers who considered it an "easy target". A fourth store reopened on the same lot as Clinton Elementary School in 1954 but failed to make a profit so itclosed again two years later; this time however, with support from local businesses who pooled their resources to reopen it under new management that included a school cafeteria and candy shop onsite). The community experienced its most serious setback when fire destroyed much of its downtown core during an arson attack on December 12th, 1957 which caused $100,000 worth of damage including $25,000 worth of property damage done to buildings within one block of the high school (the last significant fire at that location occurred seven decades later when a devastating brushfire destroyed large portions of downtown Provo) . Clinton was a small town in Utah until the early 1800s when it saw its first post office. The community was named after President George Washington, who had been born in nearby Georgetown, Virginia. Clinton's population reached only 100 people by 1892 and it ceased to exist as a village. However, the town's name lives on in the town of Clinton, which is located just south of Logan International Airport. The original platted area of the present-day town included part of what is now Park City and other parts were annexed by Logan in 1902. The early history of Clinton can be traced back to 1795 when Captain John Cranch sent out an exploratory party from Independence Rock near modern-day Pleasant Grove to explore potential sites for Mormon settlements in what is now Utah Territory. When they arrived at their landing site on July 24th, 1795, they found there was already a group of Mormons living there and called themselves the 1stUtah Battalion under Captain David Whitmer. In 1847, Brigham Young visited Clinton while on his way from Ogden to Salt Lake City and ordered all residents east of Willow Creek (now known as West Valley) burned down because he felt that they were hindering his efforts to settle new territory west of the Great Basin Desert. However, most members of the 1stUtah Battalion managed to escape route destruction and continued their settlement westward into what is now Weber County before being forced northward by forces led by General Scott during the Great Mormon Trail War (1847-48). By 1849, however, all but 10% of those living east of Willow Creek had joined Brigham Young’s movement westward into Weber County. That year also saw America’s first train journey through Cache Valley – this event helped spur further development in Clinton including construction of numerous businesses and homes around present day Park City along with building Stone Mountain Summit State Park which still stands today!
