Herriman, Utah is a city in Weber County, Utah, United States. The population was 2,895 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Salt Lake City metropolitan area. The first settlers in Herriman were James and Jane Herriman who arrived on July 3, 1847. They were farmers and entered into a lease with Brigham Young for 640 acres (253 hectares). The Herrimans built a log cabin on their land and named it "Herriman." In 1850 they donated $500 to the LDS Church which was used to purchase 640 acres (253 hectares) of land from David Bridger. The Herrimans laid out their streets and built homes. In 1854 they organized as a town. From that time until 1917 it was headquartered in Cedar City. In 1907 Brigham Young designated Herriman as home for the LDS mission headquarters because he felt that Cedar City did not have enough space for all of the missionaries assigned to serve in southern Utah at that time. On November 1, 1907 President George Q. Cannon issued an order dated December 8th directing all missions throughout America to move their operations into new buildings being constructed near Salt Lake City by January 1st of 1908 due to overcrowding in some missions' old buildings which had been converted into wards or branch offices. Consequently, on January 1st 1908 Cedar City became the new home for both LDS missionary headquarters and general headquarters for the church across America when President Cannon designated both sites within its boundaries as such
