The United States Air Force has a rich history in Highland, Utah. The USAF presence began with the arrival of American forces during World War I. In 1918, the USAAF was founded as an arm of the Department of War and it was part of the American Expeditionary Forces in France. During World War II, the USAF played a critical role in Allied victory by providing air support for ground troops and bombers against Nazi Germany. The USAF also established bases in Europe and Asia. After the war, many members of the USAF retired or were transferred to other branches of service. However, it continued to operate until its disbanding in 1987. The Highland Air Force Base Gift History began in 1941 when the United StatesAAF created a bomber squadron at Highland. The first gift was an F-4 Phantom fighter aircraft to Major Harry S. Truman, Commander in Chief of theAAF. In 1948, General Curtis LeMay presented the first USAF jet trainer, the A-10 Thunderbolt II, to Colonel William "Rick" Olson, Commanding Officer of the 1st Bombardment Wing at Highland AFB. The 1st BW also received its first KC-135 Stratotanker in 1969 and became one of only four wings in the USAF with both types of airplanes.
Highland, Utah is a small town in the Wasatch Mountains of central Utah. The population was 1,890 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Provo–Orem metropolitan area. Highland is located on Indian Creek, a tributary of the Jordan River and bordered by Mesa County to the east, Carbon County to the west and Weber County to the north. The history of Highland begins with two families that settled there in 1847: John McNaught and his wife Margaret McNaught. They built a log cabin on Indian Creek and started farming land around it. In 1865, they bought 5 square miles (12 km²) of land from Jens Jensen for $1,000. This became Highland Township in 1868 when all of Carbon County was organized into townships. In 1895, Pioneer Oil Company drilled for oil near Highlandtown; this led to an increase in business activity in the town and development of housing developments nearby such as Highlands Ranch and Cottonwood Heights. On December 12, 1907, voters approved a charter amendment establishing Highland School District No. 2 which included all present-day Highland Township as well as portions of Mesa and Carbon counties bordering on Sioux City proper within its boundaries; this district served students from kindergarten through eighth grade until 1993 when it merged with Parkview School District to form Parkview–Highland School District No. 1 which serves students from kindergarten through twelfth grade today In 1912, Horseshoe Bend Dam was completed upstream along Indian Creek forming Lake Bonneville; later that year Highway 95 was added leading into downtown via Valley View Drive In 1976 Alpine National Forest Preserve was established adjacent to Highlandtown; this coincided with increased visitation by visitors due to Ute Mountain Reservoir filling up due to overuse by residents Today's economy is based primarily on agriculture with some light industry including retail stores and professional services such as accounting firms There are three churches in Highlander: First Presbyterian Church (founded 1906), United Methodist Church (founded 1936), Catholic Apostolic church (founded 1925). There are also several elementary schools including Southridge Elementary (established 1909), Summit Heights Elementary(established 1954), Deer Valley Middle(established 1955), Northvale Intermediate(established 1957), Logan Canyon Intermediate(opened 1961), West Ridge Elementary(opened 1962) and East Ridge Elementary(opened 1965).
The first USAF gift was a cup of coffee. The Coffee Gabriel Awards were founded in 1954 in memory of the late Gabriel L. Firestone, Jr., who was an American airman and officer killed in action during World War II. The award is given to a USAF member who has exhibited heroism or excellence in airspace operations. In 1957, the USAF introduced the Air Force Merit Badge which was designed to recognize enlisted members for exceptional service to their squadron or unit. The badge could be earned by participating in actions such as combatintelligence gathering and Spotting aircraft, leading strikes against enemy targets, or performing hazardous duty tasks while on deployment with the unit. Arose from this effort was the USAF Service Stars which are currently used throughout the military services to distinction those members who have made unique contributions to their units and nation at home and abroad.
