The United States Air Force has a long and proud history of deploying gifts to countries throughout the world. On Dec. 12, 1941, the United States Air Force deployed a gift to Layton, Utah in commemoration of the city’s hosting of the annual Christmas parade. The air force donated two Spitfires as part of its Operation Santa Claus campaign.
Layton is a city in Kane County, Utah, United States. The population was 27,362 at the 2010 census. Layton is the county seat of Kane County. The name "Layton" comes from an Arabic word meaning "place of water." The history of Layton goes back to 1847 when Brigham Young and his family arrived in what is now Layton as part of the Mormon Battalion during the Mexican-American War. In 1853, Brigham Young founded the Latter-day Saints (LDS) church here and named it Nauvoo after his home town in Illinois. From Nauvoo until its closure in 1880, Layton served as one of Joseph Smith's headquarters for his LDS missionary efforts throughoutnorth America. In 1907, Layton become the first city in Utah to be incorporated with a population over 25,000 when it was included within West Valley City boundaries. By 1990, however, Layton had lost much of its economic stability due to declining agricultural prices and population growth within neighboring cities such as North Ogden and Provo. However; by 2000%, LayTON had regained some footing thanks to strong job opportunities related to new technological advances and growing tourism industry development along with increasing investment activity by local businesses including many technology parks centered around downtowns like Federal Way and Draper Park today known collectively as Americana Place

LAYTON, UT—On November 5, 2002, Layton became the newest town in Utah to be designated a “municipality” under the new Municipal Affairs Development Authority (MADA) program. The towns of Weber and American Fork were also added to the city-county form of government as part of an update to MADA legislation that took effect on October 1, 2001. The layoff of Layton’s municipal employees began on September 15,2001. As a result of this change in government policy, Layton has seen its population decrease by 3% from 2000 to 2001. However, due to its location within the Wasatch Front Regional Statistical Area (RSA), Layton still experiences high levels of economic development and employment opportunities. This is most evident in the area surroundingLayton City Hall which includes several high-tech companies and several medical clinics.
In 1847, Layton was founded by Brigham Young and his men from the LDS Church. It became a stop on the Great Salt Lake Railroad. The town was named for Captain James Layton, who fought in the Mexican-American War.
