Lindon, Utah is a city in Kane County, Utah, United States. The population was 21,724 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Kane County. Lindon is located in southeastern Utah on the border of Arizona and Nevada. The area that became Lindon was first settled by Mormon pioneers during the 1847-48 Gold Rush. In 1859, when Brigham Young led his followers eastward from Nauvoo across Illinois to Salt Lake City (now part of downtown Utah), he named these new settlements after his brother Samuel Lindon who had accompanied him on this trek. Settlement continued until about 1900 when a combination of factors - including irrigation improvements and access to coal resources - caused a rapid growth in Lindon's population and economy. By 1940, Lindon had become one of Mormonism's most important eastern towns with more than 10 businesses employing over 200 people. The present day town site was laid out as a community in 1907 by Orson Pratt and John Hyrum Smith as an experimental stop on the LDS handcart trail from Ogden to Provo. In 1941, during World War II, local residents helped build a airfield for the United States Army Air Forces at nearby Cottonwood Airport which would later be known as Mid-America Airport (MAA). The airport served both military and civilian users until its closure in 1978 due to budget cuts within the Air Force; however, it remains an official operating history site for Mid-America Airport Inc., which still operates the airport today under different name(s). Lindon was founded in 1871 by General George A. Smith and named for him after his home state of New York. The first post office was established in Lindon on November 15, 1872. Lindon was founded by the Larsen family in 1892. The town was named for Lina (Linda) Rasmusen, the daughter of Ole Rasmussen and his wife Maren. The Rasmusens first settled in a cabin on the edge of the community, but soon moved to a house on Second Street. In 1912, Lina's father died and she took over his business. She also started a woolen mill in Lindon, which operated until 1977.
