Murray, Utah is a city in Tooele County, Utah, United States. The population was 20,587 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Tooele County. It is named after General James Murray who fought in the Mexican-American War and later served as US Ambassador to Peru. The first settlers in what would become Murray were farmers and their families arriving either by wagon train or on horseback from eastern Nebraska during the early 1800s. In 1887, territorial governor Hiram J. Howe designated Murray as the site for a new Territorial capital and this became reality when the town was platted on December 5th, 1887 by John Waddell and Hyrum Jenson with land purchased from Ute Indian Chief Black Kettle. In 1914, Murray was one of sixteen cities in Tooele County that approved annexation by Salt Lake City which then annexes all but two of the remaining municipalities within Tooele County (Tooele and West Jordan). In 1916 it again became an incorporated city when it joined Salt Lake City's Metropolitan Statistical Area. On January 1st 1978, Murray annexed Cedar Vale which had been part of Ogden-Clearfield metropolitan area since 1975; this made it one of only two cities outside of Salt Lake City to have annexed another municipality (the other being Layton). On July 1st 2001 Mayor Tom Clements proposed amending incorporation ordinances to allow for up to 50% female representation on city council with no limit applied to membership size within party affiliation or gender percent if any position becomes vacant due to election disqualification/death etc.; this proposal passed 7-1 with Mayor Clements dissenting because he felt there should be no limit placed on council membership size because increasing its percentage would lead to "an artificial increase" in workload while achieving little substantive accomplishment thereby violating Hatch's Rule No: “No body may be enlarged upon without consulting” – This rule refers specifically to female representation on municipal councils where such enlargement could result in an unconstitutional majority decision that exceeds those enumerated under Hatch's more general rule governing Council composition which states: “One third of all members must be men” In November 2006 Mayor Tom Clements announced he will not seek re-election and will step down from office effective January 1st 2007; soon afterwards he appointed his wife Suzanne Clements as his replacement effective January 2nd 2007 until a new mayor can be elected pursuant to Municipal Elections Law §2-13(a) which provides for staggered terms beginning February 4th next year inclusive. As mentioned previously Suzanne Clements has held various cabinet related positions including Deputy Mayor for Economic Development & Finance since her husband left office; she also currently serves as acting mayor pro tempore pending appointment of a new mayoral candidate nominated by supporters group called United We STAND! She has also announced she will run for mayor in 2020
Murray, Utah was named in honor of General Murray who fought in the Mexican-American War. The town was founded in 1849 by Mormon pioneers. It became a community after it was given water rights from the Salt Lake Valley Railroad. The population of Murray grew rapidly and by 1870, there were 1,500 people living here. In 1896, the city was renamed Murray after Senator John F. Kennedy.
