There have been policemen gift history in Murray, Utah for many years now. The first policeman to ever live in the town was Captain John A. Moran in 1892. He purchased a shotgun from John Ladd of Cache Valley and made the town its first Station House. The department began issuing badges and other equipment to officers in 1907. In 1912, the City Council voted to name the police station after local hero, Marshal Haskell C. Bean, who had died in a shootout with outlaws two years earlier. In 1916,Captain Moran retired and was replaced by Deputy Mayor Harry Fenton. Between 1916-1931, there were six chiefs of police including Edwin Prentice who served as Chief from 1925 until his retirement in 1931. The first female officer on the force was Mrs. Florence Davenport on January 1, 1923 when she joined the department as an office assistant at Police Headquarters. Mrs Davenport would eventually become captain of patrol and chief of detectives before leaving service in 1951 having worked with the Murray Police Department for over thirty years! In 1932-1933, Murray experienced its first car theft when two automatic pistols were taken from a parked car on Main Street! One year later, another pistol was stolen from an unlocked car on Fourth Street! In 1937-1938, Doctor Jens Hansen became the very first civilian doctor to work with the Murray Police Department when he arrived to help care for injured officers during their patrols around town! On October 4th of that same year (37), Captain Harry Fenton was tragically killed while leading a unit into an ambush by outlaws near Ouray Mountain! It was later determined that Captain Fenton had been targeted due to his outspokenness about public corruption within the department!. After Captain Fenton’s death, Assistant Chief Willard Sperry took over command until September 1939 when he resigned because he could not stomach working under such unstable leadership conditions!!! Assistant Chiefs Oliver Hoke and Everett Grimes took over until 1940 when they too resigned after being accused of leaking information about Internal Affairs investigations!!! Finally Deputy Mayor Harry “Hank” Weisenger assumed command effective November 16th 1941!!! This is also documented as Deputy Mayor Weisenger becoming interim chief upon Hank’s appointment!! Deputy Mayor Weisenger would continuously serve until May 3rd 1946 when he retired due to age!! On December 5th 1946 Detective First Class George Vaught became acting chief pending replacement!! On January 8th 1947 new superintendent Charles Wren came into office replacing Superintendent Wren who had retiree status !! From 1947-1951 there were no permanent replacements!!!! It finally happened with our current superintendent Charles Wren taking over on July 1st 1951!!!!!
