Murray, Utah is located in the Great Basin region of southern Utah and comprises a small but rich history. The area was first inhabited by Native Americans, who named it for General Murray, an American general during the Mexican-American War. In 1847, Englishman James W. Hughes purchased land in present-day Murray from the Chukchansi people and founded Hughes City on the site in 1848. The city grew rapidly due to its location and natural resources, which included coal and oil wells. By 1870, Murray had a population of over 1,000 people. In 1861, Union forces attacked Confederate forces at Green River while retreating from Missouri; this event led to the Battle of Salt Lake City. The United States acquired Utah as part of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo following the war. Afterward, President Abraham Lincoln offered Congress approval for a protectorate over what is nowMurray County and Weber County; this proposal was accepted by Congress on May 6, 1862. On July 11, 1862, local residents voted to merger with Weber County to form Deseret County; however, this proposal was quickly vetoed by Governor Orson Pratt due to lack of support from within his own party. On January 25th 1865 (the date then celebrated as Utahn Independence Day), Mormon pioneers arrived at Fillmore Station nearpresent-day Murray in what is today known as wagon train day or Pioneer Day. They began their trek across America's Great Basin via wagon trains covered in dust and sometimes carrying entire families with no access to water or food whatsoever. This journey would take them more than three years before they finally reached their destination: Nauvoo (later Salt Lake City) on April 14th 1844! Upon arriving there they were immediately greeted by Brigham Young who allocated them land east of downtown for settlement purposes – what is nowMurray Valley !
