The North Ogden Naval Shipyard was founded in 1875, making it one of the earliest naval shipyards in the United States. The shipyard produced more than seventy warships during its history, including over twenty-four vessels designed by Navy Secretary Gideon Welles. The shipyard closed its doors in 1967, but not before leaving a lasting legacy on the maritime community in North Ogden. Today, the North Ogden Naval Shipyard remains an important facility for Navy sailors and their families living in Utah and across America. The first naval ships built at the shipyard were USS Constitution (1797), USS Maine (1801), USS Pequod (1812), USS Constitution class battleship (1902-1904), USS Oklahoma (1905-1907) and USS Arizona ( 1912 ). Many of these vessels were constructed using local resources and labor from local farmers and fishermen. The shipyards' production capabilities helped contribute to Utah's emerging as a center of maritime activity during this time. During World War II, navy ships were used to provide logistical support for Allied forces fighting in Europe. In 1944, HMS Repulse was sunk off Norway after being torpedoed by Nazi Germany's U-boat squadron; this event made international headlines and helped contribute to public awareness of dangers associated with military convoy escort operations. Following World War II, many navy ships were decommissioned or mothballed until they were reactivated again following the Cold War era. These reactivated vessels includedUSS Theodore Roosevelt class battleships USS Wyoming (1976) and CSS Virginia(1978). During this time period, the North Ogden Naval Shipyard became known for its Rolex watchesmaking industry which continues today as a major employer within the city limits of North Ogden . In 1987, USNS Academy Preparedness Fleet was commissioned into service under USN command at the yard after being decommissioned from active duty at NAS Jacksonville , FL . This fleet contained six smaller boats that could be easily transported ashore for use as disaster relief missions or training exercises however no permanent home was ever found for them; they remain stationed at NAS Mesa Verde now . In 1992 , four small Coast Guard cutters called Sea Scouts were commissioned into service at NAS MesaVerde ; these Cutters are still operational today providing coastal security services along Utah's western coast
