The history of the North Salt Lake Army Depot began in 1917 when the city of Orem, Utah was founded. The city became a military town after World War I because it was important for the manufacture of munitions. In 1917, General George S. Patton was hired as Commanding Officer at Orem Army Depot and soon decided that there should be an army-run depot in North Salt Lake. The first store opened at 7th Street and First Avenue in North Salt Lake on October 12, 1917. It was called “The Army Depot’s” and became one of the most popular stores in Utah because it sold military supplies and equipment to local soldiers and their families living in the area. In 1948, North Salt Lake City annexed into the city of Provo which made it easier for military personnel stationed within the city limits to buy goods from the army depot without having to go into downtown Provo. As time passed, other cities such as Logan also started to annex into Provo so that they too could have an army-run depot. By 1990, all but two of Utah’s counties had annexation agreements with Provo so that they would have access to military supplies regardless of where they were located. Today, there are over 1,600 active duty members who live within reach of the army depot including officers and enlisted men who purchase uniforms and equipment from us daily! Today, we continue to serve our community by providing necessary services such as clothing replacement programs for our troops stationed overseas as well as supplying items like food trucks for local events throughout Utah and beyond! North Salt Lake, Utah is a city in Cache County, Utah, United States. The population was 26,839 at the 2010 census. The area now comprising North Salt Lake was first settled by Mormon pioneers in 1847. It became a part of Provo City in 1896. The history of North Salt Lake began with the arrival of Mormon pioneers on July 24, 1847, when Brigham Young and Company reached what is now Cache Valley from Nauvoo, Illinois. They were met by an empty wagon train enroute to the Great Basin via what is today Weber County. This event marked the beginning of the following permanent settlement in this valley: Moroni 10 miles east of present-day North Salt Lake City on July 25th; Captured $4000 worth of goods by Indians (2nd party) on August 6th & 7th 1847; Kit Carson led 4 men out scouting for merchandise on September 9th (4 years after Beaver Dam). On October 11th some 200 Mormons under Hyrum Smith arrived at Fillmore Station about 12 miles south east of where North Salt Lake now stands. In November 1848 Captain Neil Armstrong and his troop were travelling westward from Fort Bridger overland when they came upon twelveOmaha wagons loaded with goods headed for Winter Quarters near Council Bluffs Iowa Territory which had recently been acquired by the Latter Day Saint movement from Missouri. A few days later seven more wagons brought intelligence that another company had reached Winter Quarters and there seemed to be no need for further travel That winter Brigham Young wrote "This people are not like other nations; their hearts are right good."
