The Utah Army National Guard was established in 1847 as the first U.S. military force in Utah Territory. The Guard has served throughout the state's history, most recently during the Civil War era as part of the Union army. Today, the Guard remains an important arm of the Utah government and its military capabilities have remained unchanged for over 150 years. The North Salt Lake Armory is one of only a handful of Armouries in American History that retain both their original firearms and ammunition inventory from when they were used by the United States Military to protect our state during various wars from 1775-1974. The arsenal is also home to a collection of replica cannons dating back to 1862 and 16 cannonballs found inside a Cannonnery Museum located on State Street just east of I-15 Exit 375B! In 1882, Governor John Wetherill authorized the purchase of four rifles and two shotguns from Samuel Colt's company in order to provide Guardsmen with reliable firearms for use against Apaches located near Black Mesa Ranch on Bears Peak Mountain. These guns were used successfully againstApaches until 1886 when Govt Ordinance No. 8 decided not to pursue further conflict with these nomadic Indians living off Indian Reservation land without any federal assistance (Ute Tribe). At that time it contained only five homes: Young's cabin, $5 worth of supplies each week for ten weeks; two Teamssters' wagons; one horse or mule team which pulled a plow; three baskets per person per week groceries from Cache Valley Trading Post; two horses used for carrying water from Spring Creek belowpresent-day West Jordan;; four hogs cooked over an open fire each winter inside their own pen near present-day noon Gatehouse Square.; one ox cart which transported goods between Cache Valley and Provo City
The area that is now North Salt Lake, Utah was settled by Mormon pioneers in 1847. The first town in the area was called Deseret, and it was founded by Brigham Young and his followers on the banks of the Great Salt River. In 1850, the Mormons built a fort at today's Provo City to protect their new settlement from raiders. The fort remained in operation until 1851 when it was abandoned due to Indian hostilities.
