Ogden, Utah is a town in Kane County, Utah, United States. The population was 5,531 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Ogden-Clearfield Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name "Ogden" originated from the Oglala Sioux word "o-gi-dene," meaning "place where the buffalo grazed." The first settler in what is now Ogden was James Suckling who arrived in 1853. He built his house on what is now Main Street and named it after himself, Ogden House. In 1855 a group of Methodist missionaries founded Fort Bridger on the north bank of the Snake River near present day Weber City. They called their new settlement Ogden because of its similarity to the word for buffalo (od) among the Sioux. During this time there were also Mormon settlements established in other parts of Kane County such as Cottonwood Heights and Hurricane Hill. By 1861 most of Kane County had been organized into counties; but Ogden still remained an unincorporated community within Larimer County. The Union Pacific Railroad reached Ogden by way of Kearney on November 15, 1886 as part of its Chicago Branch Line project and began services to Salt Lake City on December 1, 1886. On January 8, 1889 San Francisco California entrepreneur Hyrum Smith donated land along Main Street east of Center Avenue for a railroad station that would serve as an interchange between western railroads serving Salt Lake City and eastern railroads servicing Chicago This was also done so that travelers could easily connect with both Western Union Telegraph Company trains running through southern Utah providing communication betweenSalt Lake City and Cache Valley during winter months when train service was suspended or unavailable due to snow conditions across much of northern Utah
