Ormandy, Utah is a small town in the Wasatch Mountains located about an hour and a half south of Salt Lake City. The name comes from the Orem Valley, which is located in Ormandy. The valley was named for Ormandy, a small village in Russia. In 1847, Brigham Young founded the Saint George Mission at Ormandy and began organizing travelers to travel through what is now Utah to preach the gospel to Native Americans. The first post office in Ormandy was established on February 14, 1850. In 1865, Brigham Young organized the Latter-day Saints (LDS) into wards and branches throughout Utah. On July 15, 1867, Brigham Young designated Ormandy as one of the new towns within Salt Lake City. The first post office in Ormandy reopened on October 3rd that year with Mayor Fancher as Postmaster General. Ormandy experienced significant growth during World War II due to its strategic location on Route 84 between Provo and Ogden (now known as I-80). The town quickly became a popular stop for troops on their way to fight in Europe or Japan. After the war ended, many residents moved away or left for other towns because of economic problems brought on by recession after World War II. Today, Ormandy remains an agricultural community with a population of about 350 people who are mostly farmers and ranchers.
