The Marine Corps Deployment Gift History began in the early 1900s, when Marines brought gifts to their comrades in arms during deployments. From then on, the tradition of giving gifts to Marines continued, and has grown into a cherished part of Marine culture. Today, Marines are deployed around the world and often bring back specific items as souvenirs or mementos. Some of these pieces of memorabilia can be found throughout different branches of the military, but Orem is home to one particular type of gift history – marine gift history from the USS Mason (LHD-5) deployment in 1990. In 1990, USS Mason was deployed to Arabian Sea as part of Operation Desert Shield/Desert Storm. The LHD-5 served as an ammunition ship and arrived in Oman on December 3rd, 1990. The next day, she delivered humanitarian supplies to Yemeni refugees who had been displaced by war between Yemen and Saudi Arabia. After arriving at its destination, USS Mason provided security for a United Nations peacekeeping force that was monitoring Resolution 1514 which requested UN forces be called into Bahrain for strikes against Iranian targets. On January 20th 1991, after two months deployment aboard ship, USS Mason departed Bahrain with her mission accomplished and arrived at Hawaii on February 5th following passage through the Panama Canal. Following her return trip home on March 1st via Guam and Japan [the first time an American warship had visited Japan since World War II], USS Mason stopped at Yokosuka Naval Base before continuing onward to San Diego on March 7th where she decommissioned on April 25th 1992 after serving 29 yearsressofficial duty with distinction afloat! Today’s HMCS Vancouver (LPH-8) honors HMS Mason by naming her after her during this same deployment!

Orem, Utah is a city in Davis County, Utah, United States. The population was 953 at the 2010 census. Orem is named after Orem, Isreal. The name means "homestead of the God-fearing." The original Mormon settler in this area was John D. Lee and his family who arrived in 1847. In 1858 Brigham Young established a small farming town near present day Orem on the eastern edge of Davis County. This early community was known as Springdale because it lay within the springs that produced groundwater for irrigation and drinking purposes. By 1861 Springdale had grown sufficiently to be incorporated as a city with its own government and schools; however, it remained an agricultural center until after World War II when industry took over and growth accelerated along Highway 20 which bisected Davis County thenomed eastward into Salt Lake City proper zone

Orem, Utah is a small town in the Wasatch Front region of Utah. The population was 1,814 at the 2010 census. Orem is one of the oldest communities in Utah and has been inhabited by Native Americans for several centuries. The first Europeans to arrive in what is now Utah were Mormon missionaries who traveled through the area in 1847. In 1851, Brigham Young founded the city of Orem on land that he had purchased from the Waco Indians. The arrival of white settlers led to tensions and conflict with the indigenous people throughout pioneer times. Today, Orem remains an vibrant community with a rich history that is worth preserving. The early days of Orem were difficult as it was located on top of a hill and required hard work to get by. However, over time this community slowly started to grow and prosper due to its location, good resources, and friendly relations with its neighbors. By 1870, there were over 150 residents living in Orem when it was renamed after General James Hyrum Smith - one of Young's key advisors during his presidency (1870-1876). Over time, other towns also grew up around Orem including Park City (established in 1907), Sandy (established in 1911), West Valley City (established in 1925), South Jordan (established in 1941), Auto Parts Town (established in 1965), and finally Northridge (Established in 1997). Today, much of what once made up Orem has been replaced by new development but portions such as its downtown core remain bustling with activity thanks to their unique character and rich history
