Roy, Utah is a small town located in the Wasatch Mountains of southeastern Utah. The population was 2,491 at the 2010 census. Roy was platted in 1892, and named for Roy A. Cook, an early settler who lived in the area. The first post office opened in 1893, and Roy remained an unincorporated community until 1912 when it became part of Park City. In 1912, Park City annexed Roy as its official municipality. The town has experienced several migrations over the years; most recently there has been a large influx of Latinos since 2007. This change has had a significant impact on local economy as well as social dynamics within the community. Additionally, Roy is home to two LDS churches: the First Presidency chapel and Stake Center for Women & Children (formerly known as Pioneer Mothers). Roy's history began with pioneering settlers such as Captain John Cohan and his family who arrived in 1869 from New York City looking for land to farm and build their homes on. Over time, other families followed suit including Captain Lewis Aspinall’s family who arrived in 1875; Captains James Wightman and Augustus Noble Woodruff during 1902-1903; George Smedley’s family which came toRoy in 1907; Myron Tolbert’s group that arrived in 1910; Hiram Bingham’s men who started farming there in 1916 were among those who founded Mormon Village near Nowhere along Interstate 15 on property donated by Bingham himself – making this one of only four settlements established east of Salt Lake City on private land where Mormons could live without fear of public opinion or prosecution from LDSHQ. In 1941, following World War II when polygamy was outlawed across America due to increased religious opposition by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS), Roy became one of just three towns west of Salt Lake City that did not become involved with organized religion – remaining officially unaffiliated until 1990 when it joined Park City under its present name while still retaining its own governmental structure which included both a mayoralty and a city council members appointed by the park commissioners themselves rather than through election process like most municipalities within Park City Authority limits are currently required to do pursuant to ordinance §2-8-060(a).
