The Utah National Guard has a rich history dating back to the early 1800s. The first national guard unit in Utah was organized on February 14, 1852, and it became known as the 1st Regiment of militia. The regiment was later renamed the 2nd Regiment of Militia on November 15 of that year. In 1861, the 1st Regiment was redesignated as Company A of the Utah Volunteers and served in the Union army during the American Civil War. After the war, Company A disbanded and its members joined other units in Utah volunteer militias until 1868 when they were again redesignated as Company A of the National Guard. From then until 1941, Company A made periodic appearances at various state fairs throughout Utah helping promote agriculture and commerce while also providing an opportunity for soldiers to socialize with their civilian counterparts. Following World War II,Company A disbanded again but its members were reorganized into three battalions which continued to make occasional appearances at state fairs through 1969. In 1971-1972, these battalions were combined into one battalion which is currently known as Battalion C of the National Guard.
