Saratoga Springs, Utah is a city in Weber County, Utah, United States. The population was 9,824 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Weber County. The name Saratoga Springs comes from the word "sarasota," meaning "spring."The first springs in what is now Saratoga Springs were established by Captain John Cushing and his party of men while they were traveling through Weber County in 1848. He named them ``Cushing's Spring.''The development of Saratoga Springs began with the construction of a railroad station on December 12, 1850 by George Stephenson and others who built the Mormon Trail between St. Louis and Salt Lake City. This town grew rapidly because it became the commercial center for eastern Weber County. By 1860, there were taverns, grocery stores, hotels, and other businesses in town.Families who had moved to Sarataga from Ogden or Provo also started making their home here during this time period. In 1865 Reva Murchison brought her family from Logan to live here permanently after living in Liberty Grove for many years on top of Rocky Mountain Steel Works (later Rocky Mount Steel) on state land east of present-day downtown Sarataga Springs. Mrs. Murchison is considered to be one of the earliest settlers in this area and she helped start two churches - First Presbyterian Church (later Moody Bible Institute) and Christ Episcopal Church (now First United Methodist Church).In 1868 a school was built in town by J P Morgan & Co., which served as a model for many subsequent schools throughout Utah Territory.- In 1870 A&P grocery store was founded by Wm H Jackson with local blacksmith shops being added later.- By 1880 there were seven businesses operating in town: four stores operated by individuals and three stores operated by various partnerships.- In 1889 an flour mill was built which produced flour for general market use until 1966 when it closed; thereafter it continued to produce cheese until 1978 when it stopped.- On February 26th 1890 Congress passed an act entitled An Act Relative To Education And Businesses Of The Territories Which Entered Into effect That Day For The Purpose Of Making More Easy And Effectual Way Of Allocating Expenditures Thereon,- On May 15th 1890 John W Sutherland came into possession of 640 acres south west of present day downtown Sarataga Springs along with $5200 cash payment made over ten days as part as part of Goodwill Agreement that followed World War I.; he named this tract ``Saratoga Ridge'' after his father-in-law Colonel James K Richardson who had own extensive land west of Salt Lake City including much within today's boundaries known as Park Hills Ranch
On July 15, 1868, the Utah Territory was organized and Saratoga Springs became its capital. The town's first mayor was John Fenton and it had a population of only 10 people. In 1870, the Territorial Legislature designated Saratoga Springs as the seat of government for all of Utah. The first U District Court met in Saratoga Springs on October 1, 1870. On November 7, 1871, Saratoga Springs City Council voted to name the city after General David Hunter who led an American army against Mexico in 1846.
