One such battle occurred on October 10th, 1877 when six settlers were killed by Indians in what is known as “The Battle of Red Riverâ€. The area that now makes up South Jordan was first settled by Mormon pioneers in 1847 and has been home to the Mormons since 1849. The community soon grew around its church institutions and as agricultural production increased in the 1850s, many Latter-day Saints also began moving into South Jordan to take advantage of its fertile soil and available water resources. By 1860, however, most of what would become South Jordan had already been developed as an agricultural town with small tracts of forest left for housing and commercial purposes. In 1902, Brigham Young University (BYU) opened its third campus in what would become South Jordan; this initial influx of students helped spur development within the community and led to a boom in business activity which continues today. In 1935 BYU moved again when it became Utah State University; during this time much growth took place within downtown SouthJordan while smaller portions continued to be developed into residential areas such as Highland Park and West Valley Village. Today much of downtown SouthJordan remains largely unchanged from those early days including architecturally significant buildings such as LDS Church headquarters (1936), Palazzo Hotel (1939), Tittle Building (1940), First Presidency Building (1965), Marriott Hotel (1975), and Provo Central Library (1988). During World War II many businesses closed due to military action; however, after 1945 there was an increase in civilian employment thanks to low oil prices and suburbanization across Weber County which drove outfolk who used to live close by for shopping or access to essential services like schools or hospitals. This migration created tensions within the community about how best to handle growth which eventually led to violence throughout the late 1990s until 2001 when Mayor David Hays authorized police response measures during evening rush hours following several high-profile crimes in nearby Logan Heights that were considered racially motivated
