St. George, Utah is a city in the United States located on the Wasatch Front, about 185 miles (290 kilometers) north of Salt Lake City and 120 miles (160 kilometers) east of Denver. As of the 2010 census, the population was 97,596. The name "St. George" is first mentioned in 1847 as a place where Latter-day Saints were proselytizing for Jesus Christ. In 1853, Brigham Young designated this area as the site for his new Mormon Tabernacle Choir headquarters and called upon his followers to build there "a tabernacle or House of Worship to be dedicated by me." After Joseph Smith's death in1844, Brigham Young appointed James E Sprague, who had been instrumental in organizing and leading the Nauvoo Legion during Smith's time as president of Mormon Battalion, to lead an investigation into what happened at Nauvoo. Sprague determined that Smith had not died natural but was murdered by forces working under Governor Douglas MacArthur while he was being transported from Carthage Jail back to Jackson County Jail in Illinois Territory; this event became known as the Nauvoo Massacre. From here began Utah's long struggle with neighboring Nevada over control of this territory which eventually resulted in its admission into the United States as a state on November 1st Legislature year 1868 The cornerstone for LDS Church's first temple was laid on July 12th 1865 by President Lorenzo Snow at what would become St. George Park across from downtown StGeorge today In 1907 Pioneer Day was celebrated annually throughout Utah honoring early pioneers who settled this region On January 4th 1909 StGeorge’s Volunteer Fire Department No1 responded to a call for help after 10 people were trapped below ground when their wagon went down a well near State Route 150 and US Highway 89 Due largely to oil exploration efforts conducted by local ranchers starting around 1911–1912 many wells were drilled adjacent to town limits including one well drilled through private property now known as North Temple Well #2 which intersects Main Street just west of Original Depot; it has been said that some residents may have received up to $5 per day from these activities Salt Lake City annexed StGeorge on Valentine’s Day 1912 making it an incorporated city within Salt Lake County . On December 6th 1916 citizens voted 3-to-1 against annexation into Salt Lake City because they felt that policies put into effect since 1910 could not ensure equal treatment under city ordinances

Salt Lake City, Utah is home to many interesting and colorful characters from its past. One of these colorful characters was St. George, who was a Mormon missionary in the early 1900s. Born in 1867, George was one of six children born to parents named John and Anna (Crawford) George. He attended school in Logan, Utah before moving with his family to Provo, UT in 1881. George soon became interested in Christianity and decided to become a missionary for the LDS Church. George traveled throughout the Great Plains preaching the gospel of Jesus Christ until he reached Salt Lake City on October 15th, 1901. Here he met and married Sarah Greenough-Bourke on December 3rd that year. The couple would have three children: John Jr., Anna Louise, and Ruth Ann. George’s work as a missionary continued through World War I and into World War II; however, his greatest contribution during those years may have been his work with orphans. In 1922 he founded the St. George Orphanage which would provide care for boys and girls living without families in Salt Lake City or other nearby cities. From its beginnings until its closing in 1978, the St. George Orphanage had helped more than 4500 kids find their way back into society by providing them with education, shelter, food, love, and adventure!
