West Valley City is a city in Utah, United States. The population was 13,569 at the 2010 census. West Valley City is located in Wasatch County and is part of the Provo–Orem metropolitan area. It lies on the eastern edge of the Wasatch Mountains, east of Bonneville Dam and south of Syracuse. The area that would become West Valley City was first settled by Mormons in 1847 as an agricultural region around what is now Syracuse. In 1863, Brigham Young sold 2,000 acres (800 hectares) to Alfred Senter for $3 per acre ($640 total). The town began to grow rapidly after Senter built a sawmill and other businesses in 1870. By 1890, West Valley City had a population of 10,000 people and became a city under chieftaincy rules with a mayor-council form of government. During World War II, many residents served in the military; some were drafted into combat units while others worked as civilians on Victory gardens or helped out with munitions production or transportation. After the war ended, many residents returned to their homes but continued to use their businesses as wartime contacts closed down or new ones were established nearby such as Sam's Club and Best Buy among others.
