Burlington, Vermont is a small town in the state of Vermont. It was founded in 1763 by John Montpelier and his wife Rachel.[1] The town has been continuously inhabited since that time. Burlington is located in the western half of Vermont, on the banks of the Burlington River. The population was 20,815 as of 2010[2] and it is one of the most ethnically diverse areas in New England. The city's largest industry is education, with many colleges and universities located there. The earliest settlers were farmers who arrived from Massachusetts. They built log cabins and started farming around 1765. In 1814, Burlington became part of Canada because of the war between Great Britain and America. In 1818, Burlington voted to become an independent city.[3] In 1847, Burlington elected its first mayor, Ebenezer Howard. That year saw important changes in Burlington when railroad construction began nearby and streetlights were installed.[4] In 1865, Mayor Samuel Jepson proposed annexing neighboring townships to make up for the lack of land available for development within our city limits: Greenfield Township (later Waterford Township), Easton Township (later Northampton County), West Milford Township (later Rutland County), Addison Borough (now Vt.)[5][6][7], Milton Borough (now Ithaca).[8][9],[10] all rejected except for Milton which annexed as part of South Hadley Townships in 1903; this annexation created what is now called “Milton” borough inside South Hadley Townships boundaries today ? This long process finally resulted in incorporation on October 15th 1889 by proclamation from Governor Charles Evans Hughes - becoming one municipality with a population over 10,000 people under one roof! In 1904-1905 Milton annexed Addison Borough into their municipal boundaries after a referendum held at that time; these annexations also created what is now called “Addison” borough inside South Hadley Townships boundaries today However due to growing population density within south hadleytownship overloading signals sent out by british post office led to more than doubling rates for mail service within south hadleytownship creating a public outcry leading to abandonment or relocation/combination with other municipalities including northamptoncounty during World War II resulting back into originalsouthhadleytownship borders until today !!
